So interesting! If you want to read more about the history here is a good full write up. It was funded by a dating site he had created (while he was working as a PHP programmer for another guy with a dating site), so living off the proceeds from that site gave him a lot of time to make the awesome Garry’s Mod. Garry Newman says in an interview that he was just messing around, trying to learn the SDK, and learn it he did, and changed the course of gaming history, even if just by a little bit. Being such a huge success it’s hard to imagine that it started off by accident (like most great discoveries). The heart of it is still the Sandbox, it’s where most people spend their time, just building silly things and showing them off.

The ecosystem is thriving, still, years after release. Now I like to think of it as almost a minecraft for Valve games – because people are making add-ons, maps, and tons of other stuff for people to add into GMOD. It reminds me of those old debug modes in video games, I remember ages ago when Sonic the Hedgehog was popular there was a debug mode where you could spawn all the objects in the game – GMOD is like the super evolved version of that. Garry’s Mod was originally a mod for Valve’s Half-Life 2, but was later made into a standalone game. It is such an interesting mod – it is basically a neat sandbox physics game using a modified Source engine designed by Garry Newman, with not much point other than to have a LOT of fun with all of the half life games source objects and maps. Im waiting for someone else to come in here who doesnt say things everyone already knows. So recently I finally installed Garry’s Mod – I had heard about it for years, but never ventured into it, until now. Im not mad im just chilling just because i stated my thoughts how does that make me mad Try to search more detailed guides rather than getting angry at me for pointing out the turth. Nobody said where should i start so i start off with the easiest things and i literally made an addon on my first attempt. I started to learn lua from Youtube videos + Garry's Mod wiki. Just look for some good guides that shows you where to start. Like i said, unless you have a friend,THERE IS NO WAY to cheese it. I learned hammer editor from internet videos as well. People would probobly tell where you should start. The only way you can learn coding or lua coding is on youtube videos.

Why are you angry at me for pointing out the turth ? Originally posted by nat is gamedev:just telling me "learn Lua and did you know Lua is hard" is useless advice, it adds nothing to the thread that me or anyone else can use or hasnt heard before.
